In journalism school, you’re taught to look at a whole layout, to see how everything does or does not work together. Here are some reasons why they teach you that.

I’ve been reading over Psalms 51 today and something really struck me. This psalm was written a time after David has committed adultery and murder. He first sleeps with Bathsheba and killed her husband by setting it up that he’d be killed in battle. If you read the psalm you can see how David reacts to his sin after he is confronted about it. David is distraught about his sin. He’s begging and pleading with God to be forgiven and to be cleaned of his sin.
While I was making the connection between this psalm and that story I started thinking, “Yeah, David should be distraught, mad at himself, and pleading with God to be cleaned. He did a terrible thing!” And I continued thinking, “I would never do that! I’ve never and would never sin that bad.” But then I remember what Jesus said. Jesus said if we even look on someone with lust then we’ve already committed adultery in our hearts and if we even get angry at a brother or sister then we’ve already murdered in our heart. (Matthew 5) And if that’s the case then I don’t think we take sin seriously enough. I know in my life I’ll compare my sin to others and think compared to their sin my sin isn’t nearly as bad or I’ll rest too much in the idea that my sin is cover by Jesus’ sacrifice, which I know it is, but that’s not excuse to not take sin seriously. We are called to be holy and if we’re ever going to get closer to looking like Jesus then I think we need to start looking at sin the way David did.
Sin isn’t something that we can just overlook. Sin is something we need to take to God and ask for forgiveness and ask Him to help us get closer to holiness. I’m not saying we should condemn ourselves and let sin have rule over our assurance in Christ, but we shouldn’t just look at sin so passively. I want to react to sin the way David did: He took it to God.
We should pray like David prayed: “Wash me thoroughly from my transgressions and cleanse me of my sin!”
"Create in me a clean heart , O God, and renew a right spirit within me."
We should constantly seek God about cleaning us of our sins and renewing a right spirit with us. I pray God would wreck me like He wrecked David when he sinned. I pray God would convict me of my sin and help me get closer to looking like His Son.
I’m not trying to bog you down with rules or say you have to confess every little sin or else you’re not truly saved. What I’m trying to do is have us open our eyes to what sin is and the severity of it. Sin isn’t something to be taken likely.
But here’s the great part, when we do ask for forgiveness God is always there to forgive and help us get back on the right track. No sin is too big that it can’t be forgiven and to be cured of. Jesus is ready to forgive.
This is just what I got out of this today while studying.
I hope this has encouraged you and even challenged you. It’s definitely challenged me.
